Wizz Air has resumed its direct flights between Varna and Milan Bergamo, marking the event with a celebration at Varna Airport’s newly opened Gate Garden at Terminal 2. The reopening of this route coincides with the eighth anniversary of Wizz Air’s base in Varna, during which the airline has carried nearly five million passengers to and from the city.

The renewed connection to Milan Bergamo will operate twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, providing additional options for travelers heading to Northern Italy for both business and leisure purposes.

To commemorate the anniversary, eight passengers on the inaugural flight received “Pink Tickets,” which are Wizz Air vouchers worth 20 euros that can be used for future travel within the airline’s network. These tickets were described as reminiscent of Willy Wonka’s “Golden Ticket.”

Anastasia Novak, Corporate Sustainability and Communications Manager at Wizz Air, stated: “Resuming flights to Milan Bergamo is an important step  in expanding our network  from Varna and  a wonderful way to celebrate eight years  of successful operations  in Bulgaria’s seaside capital. The symbolic surprise with the ‘Pink Tickets’ is our way of thanking our passengers for choosing to fly with us and adding a touch of fun to their journey. Let’s WIZZ together to new destinations!”

Since establishing its base in Varna in 2017, Wizz Air has expanded its routes from the city to over ten European destinations including London, Brussels, Tel Aviv, Hamburg, Eindhoven, and soon Bratislava. In spring 2025, a second Airbus A321neo was stationed in Varna by Wizz Air. This move increased capacity and provided more job opportunities in the region.

Michael Reusch, CEO of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD commented: “Wizz Air has been a valuable partner of Varna Airport ever since their very first flight back in 2007. Together, we have celebrated important milestones – the opening of their Varna base, the stationing of a second aircraft and hopefully soon a third one. Since 2018, Wizz Air has been the market leader here, and nearly five million passengers have traveled with us to and from Varna. We are proud that Varna stands among Wizz Air’s top-performing bases in terms of punctuality – a true reflection of our shared commitment to operational excellence. Today, we are particularly delighted about the long-awaited re-launch of the Bergamo route, and we look forward to further strengthening this successful partnership.”

In 2025 alone so far, Wizz Air has operated over 2,500 flights connecting Varna with various destinations across Europe; nearly all these flights—99.3%—were completed as scheduled. With approximately 450,000 passengers carried this year alone through its services at Varna Airport—and holding around a 39% share of local air traffic—the airline remains an important contributor to regional connectivity and economic growth.
