Ljubljana Airport has expanded its winter schedule with the addition of a direct route to Barcelona, operated by Spanish low-cost airline Vueling. This new service is the third destination added this year, following Las Palmas and Manchester.
Vueling’s Chief Network and Strategy Officer, Jordi Pla, commented on the launch: “At Vueling, we are deeply committed to connecting Europe with Spain, and our new route between Ljubljana and Barcelona is a great example of that. It is the only direct connection between the two cities, and we are proud to make it possible. We are confident this new route will inspire residents of both Ljubljana and Barcelona to discover new cultures and enjoy easier travel between two vibrant and inspiring cities.”
Dr. Babett Stapel, Managing Director of Fraport Slovenija, welcomed the partnership: “We are very pleased to welcome Vueling as a new partner at Ljubljana Airport. The long-awaited connection with Barcelona brings more than just new flight options – it also represents an additional opportunity to strengthen economic, tourism and cultural ties between the two countries. We expect the route to be well received both by Slovenian travellers and by visitors from Spain.”
The flights between Ljubljana Airport and Barcelona will run twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays. During the holiday period from December 9 to January 6, a third weekly flight will be available on Tuesdays. The service uses Airbus A320 aircraft, with tickets available through Vueling’s website (www.vueling.com) or its mobile app.
Barcelona El Prat Airport serves as an important European aviation hub for Vueling, offering connections to over 100 destinations in 30 countries. The introduction of this route provides Slovenian travelers with access to Vueling’s extensive network while making Slovenia more accessible for visitors from Spain.
Vueling operates about 250 routes year-round from its main base in Barcelona El Prat Airport. In 2024, it conducted over 223,000 flights and carried 38 million passengers.
Ljubljana Airport has reported strong growth in passenger numbers recently. In October alone, over 150,000 passengers used the airport—an increase of 18% compared to October last year. From January through October 2025, more than 1.38 million travelers passed through Ljubljana Airport—a rise of nearly 10% compared to the same period in the previous year. Increasing passenger traffic remains one of Fraport Slovenija’s primary goals.
