Ljubljana Airport will introduce a new direct flight to Barcelona El Prat Airport, operated by Spanish low-cost airline Vueling. The route is set to begin on November 16, 2025, with flights scheduled twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays. During the holiday season from December 9 to January 6, an extra weekly flight will be added on Tuesdays.
The flights will use Airbus A320 aircraft. Tickets are available through the airline’s website and mobile app.
“We are very pleased to welcome Vueling among the carriers at Ljubljana Airport. The new route to Barcelona, one of Europe’s most visited and vibrant cities, is an exciting addition to our network. It strengthens our connectivity with Southern Europe and offers attractive flight options for our passengers,” said Dr. Babett Stapel, Managing Director of Fraport Slovenija.
Barcelona El Prat Airport acts as a major European hub for Vueling, which connects travelers to more than 100 destinations across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. This new connection aims to improve travel choices for passengers from Slovenia and make Ljubljana Airport more accessible for visitors coming from Spain.
Vueling remains the largest carrier at Barcelona-El Prat Airport. In 2024, it operated over 223,000 flights across about 220 routes in 30 countries and carried around 38 million passengers.
This announcement comes as part of a broader expansion at Ljubljana Airport in 2025 that includes six new routes. Alongside Vueling’s service to Barcelona, recent additions include Eurowings’ flights to Düsseldorf and KLM’s service to Amsterdam. New connections planned for next year also include Air Albania flying to Tirana, easyJet starting service to Manchester, and airBaltic launching flights to Las Palmas.
According to ACI Europe’s Connectivity Report 2025 (https://www.aci-europe.org/), Slovenia has recorded a significant increase in air connectivity—23 percent year-on-year—which is the highest growth rate among EU member states this year. Factors contributing to this result include stronger participation by existing airlines at Ljubljana Airport and the arrival of new carriers through joint efforts with government bodies and tourism organizations amid growing demand for air travel.
Passenger numbers have also risen notably: July saw more than 181,000 travelers pass through Ljubljana Airport—a rise of about 12 percent compared with July last year. From January through July over 870,000 passengers were recorded—a seven percent increase over the same period in the previous year—with projections indicating up to approximately 1.5 million passengers handled by year’s end.
