Wizz Air will begin operating a new direct route between Varna Airport and Rome Fiumicino Airport starting September 22, 2026. The flights are scheduled three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Tickets for the service are available through Wizz Air’s website and mobile application.
This addition marks the second scheduled Italian destination from Varna Airport, following the introduction of the Varna-Bergamo route in September 2025. The new service aims to improve air connectivity between Bulgaria and Italy, which is popular among Bulgarian travelers for both business and leisure purposes.
Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD manages Varna Airport as part of its operations along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The company also operates Burgas Airport in southeastern Bulgaria, serving as gateways to destinations across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Fraport Bulgaria acts as concessionaire for both airports and is majority-owned by Fraport AG with a 60% share. In a recent year, these airports handled over 3.4 million passengers on more than 25,000 flights operated by 73 airlines to 146 destinations (https://burgas-airport.bg/en).
Michael Reusch, Chief Executive Officer of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD said: “The new direct route between Varna and Rome is a tangible result of our long-term efforts to develop air connectivity along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast and of our active cooperation with airline partners. Italy is among the key markets with growing interest for both leisure and business travel, while Rome is a leading European hub offering excellent transfer opportunities and access to the global aviation network. Our partnership with Wizz Air is essential for expanding the destination portfolio from Varna Airport and for strengthening its position as a competitive and modern regional airport.”
Anastasia Novak, Corporate Sustainability and Communications Manager at Wizz Air commented: “With the launch of the new direct Varna-Rome Fiumicino route, we continue to expand international travel opportunities from the Black Sea region and respond to the growing demand for Italy. The new service offers a convenient connection to one of Europe’s most significant capitals and is part of our long-term commitment to sustainable growth in Bulgaria. Our investments in a modern fleet, operational reliability and an enhanced customer experience through our Customer First Compass programme enable us to offer an increasing number of affordable and convenient international travel options from Bulgarian airports.”
