The U.S. Department of State announced a new version of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and encouraged all U.S. citizens traveling or living abroad to re-enroll in the new program.

The updated STEP platform introduces several new features, allowing users to create a login.gov account to tailor their subscriptions and receive country-specific email alerts at their preferred times. Travelers can enroll for multiple trips or locations simultaneously and have the flexibility to modify their subscriptions or unenroll at any point, according to a press release from the U.S. Embassy.

Enrolling in STEP facilitates communication from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate during emergencies, ensuring that citizens receive timely safety and security notifications. The Department of State strongly urges all U.S. citizens abroad to take advantage of these new functionalities by enrolling or re-enrolling today.

The new program impacts U.S. citizens and travelers in countries worldwide.

U.S. citizens are also encouraged to connect with the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs online as well as their nearest U.S. Embassy.
