The United States announced additional assistance to Moldova during the Moldova Partnership Platform ministerial conference held in Chisinau on September 17.
The new assistance package includes $38 million aimed at enhancing energy security, promoting trade, supporting independent media, and strengthening local public administration. An additional $4 million will be allocated through USAID to expand Moldova’s fruit exports and support small and medium-sized enterprises in the region.
The U.S. Department of State (DOS) and USAID announced plans to collaborate with Congress on securing an additional $75 million in development assistance. This funding would focus on improving Moldova’s transportation and logistics infrastructure, as well as enhancing its cybersecurity capabilities.
“The United States remains deeply committed to our more than 30-year partnership with Moldova and looks forward to continuing our cooperation to build a democratic, prosperous, and secure future for all Moldovans,” USAID Assistant Administrator Erin McKee said.
With this new funding, total U.S. assistance to Moldova since February 2022 is now $949 million, part of the over $2.6 billion in aid since Moldova’s independence.
In addition to these announcements, Assistant Administrator McKee held discussions with Romanian Foreign Minister Luminița Odobescu regarding U.S.-Romanian efforts to advance Moldova’s energy security. The partnership aims to improve Moldova’s access to the European electricity market by supporting the construction of the Gutinaș-Strășeni transmission line, a new 400 kV interconnector.
