The Republic of Serbia’s Ministry of Education, Science and
Technological Development recently announced a new campaign, KODigranje, under
its Battle for Knowledge initiative through which it hopes to increase the digital
literacy of primary students throughout the country.

Through the program, the government hopes to eventually
install robotic and IT equipment in all of the country’s primary schools,
allowing students to learn about programming and modern technology, and also to
learn about other subjects more effectively by using that technology. The
government intends to improve the students’ critical-thinking and
problem-solving skills as well as prepare them for potential future careers in
technological sectors.

In the first phase of the project, select schools will be
chosen, via an application process, to receive the equipment. Teachers at
those schools will go through training to learn how to use and teach the
technology, and students in those schools will take part in a national
competition.

The initiative is supported by the ministry, the Association
of Serbian Science Professors and the Center for Creative Thinking.
Additionally, Croatian Makers League Founder Nenad Bakic is KODigranje’s first
donor.

The ministry is currently accepting applications from schools
to take part in the first phase of the campaign, which are due by Jan. 25.
