Ion Iliescu, the former President of Romania and a key political figure after 1989, died on August 5, 2025. He served as Head of State several times and was the leader of Romania’s main left-wing party during his political career.
Iliescu played a role in shaping Romania’s direction through important decisions and documents, including the Snagov Declaration and the revision of the Constitution in 2003. These actions contributed to significant political and institutional changes in the country.
His death marks the end of an era defined by Romania’s transition from communism and substantial changes in public life. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan commented on Iliescu’s legacy: “His passing marks the close of a significant chapter in the country’s recent history, one defined by post-communist transition and profound transformations in public life.”
Bolojan also stated: “Ion Iliescu now enters history, subject to its fair assessment.” He extended condolences to Iliescu’s family, friends, and those who were close to him: “I extend my condolences to his family, friends, and all who were close to him.”
