Piraeus Port Authority recently released data on
vehicle throughput in its car terminal for 2016, which shows a 6 percent
increase over throughput in 2015.

According to the port authority, vehicle throughput for 2016
was 361,912, compared to 341,386 in 2015. This increase comes despite ongoing economic
hardship in Greece, strikes and other factors that have had negative
effects on passenger car imports.

The port authority noted that the second half of 2016 showed
a marked increase on 2015’s vehicle throughput, rising by 20 percent. These
gains have ranked Piraeus’ car terminal among the top terminals in the
Eastern Mediterranean in terms of traffic despite Greece’s
relatively low rate of car imports and growing
competition among ports in the region, many of which are building new
terminals.

In addition to increased car throughput, Piraeus’ car terminal was certified in 2015 by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance/Hellenic
Lloyd’s SA, where it attained International Quality Management Standards ISO
9001:2008 and Environment ISO 14001:2004.
