Fraport Slovenija has completed a major infrastructure project at Ljubljana Airport with the opening of Taxiway J. The new taxiway, which began construction in March 2024, is part of a multi-million-euro effort that also included renovating a section of Taxiway A. This project provides a dedicated turning area for large aircraft at the western threshold of the runway and aims to improve operational efficiency and maintain safety standards.
Boštjan Šijanec, Director of Infrastructure at Fraport Slovenija, stated: “The total investment in the construction of the new Taxiway J and the renovation of part of Taxiway A – a project that significantly upgrades and develops Slovenia’s airport infrastructure and strengthens our position as the most modernly equipped airport in the region – amounts to €5.35 million. With the successful completion of the project, we have, in accordance with modern standards, provided an appropriate turning area for the largest aircraft at runway threshold 12, thereby taking an important step forward in strengthening the airport’s operational capabilities.”
Construction was carried out by Gorenjska Gradbena Družba from March to June 2024. Nearly 9,000 square meters were paved for Taxiway J while close to 20,000 square meters on Taxiway A were resurfaced. Asphalt removed from Taxiway A was recycled and used elsewhere.
After initial construction ended in summer 2024, electrical work and installation of airfield lighting followed on Taxiway J. About 35 kilometers of cables and 59 LED lights were installed along with a specialized control system to monitor their status. Ten new signs were added to mark Taxiway J.
Fraport Slovenija has invested over €83 million since 2014 into modernizing Ljubljana Airport’s infrastructure and technology. Notable projects include a €21 million terminal opened in 2021. The current investment cycle prioritizes improvements such as apron renovation set for completion by late 2026. The company also plans future investments focused on sustainability as it works toward making Ljubljana Airport carbon neutral by 2045.
