Kenya’s ambassador to Greece, Tom Amolo, recently met with Piraeus Port Authority (PPA) leadership at the company’s headquarters to discuss how cooperation between PPA and Kenya can expand.

Kenya has strong trade ties with the European Union and relies on Piraeus as a gateway to the Balkan states and South and Central Europe. Kenya itself boasts a population of 40 million, and Mombasa, the region’s largest imports and exports port, serves many inland African countries. Strong coordination between the two ports is beneficial to both, according to a press release.

PPA and Kenya have been working to strengthen ties for several years, with multiple high-level delegations from the country visiting Piraeus. PPA also helped found the Hellenic-Kenyan Chamber.

The latest meeting between Kenyan officials and the PPA covered preparations for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to further develop relations between the ports in terms of shipping and maritime transports.

PPA CEO Capt. Fu Chengqiu characterized cooperation between Piraeus and Mombasa as a “new door” for developing transit trade between Greece and Kenya and an opportunity for the two countries to strengthen their maritime connections.
