Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD has started a major runway rehabilitation project at Burgas Airport, with an investment exceeding €50 million. The official groundbreaking ceremony was held on November 10, coinciding with the 19th anniversary of the airport concession in Bulgaria.
The event brought together several officials, including Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Anguel Zabourtov, Burgas Regional Governor Vladimir Krumov, Mayor of Pomorie Municipality Ivan Aleksiev, Deputy Mayor of Burgas Municipality Stanimir Apostolov, Senior Executive VP Global Investments & Management at Fraport AG Holger Schaefers, Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of Fraport Twin Star Denitza Weismantel and board member Hristo Todorov. Local authorities, institutional representatives, and business partners were also present.
Archimandrite Dimitry conducted a blessing for the occasion. Attendees observed ongoing construction activities on the runway, taxiways, and apron. The ceremony ended with a cake-cutting to mark the start of what is described as one of the largest infrastructure investments in Burgas Airport’s history.
According to Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, this project reflects their commitment to high safety standards and sustainable airport development. Construction will take place during winter while flight operations are suspended; reopening is planned before Summer 2026.
“This project is a strategic investment in the future of Burgas Airport and the region. It demonstrates our long-term commitment to Bulgaria and to the continuous improvement of airport infrastructure that meets international safety and quality standards. Investing today means laying the foundation for opportunities of tomorrow,” said Michael Reusch, CEO of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD.
After more than four decades in use, the existing runway surface requires full reconstruction. The work will involve replacing pavement structures, installing new lighting and drainage systems, modernizing safety zones to meet global standards, and laying approximately 100,000 metric tons of asphalt over 3,200 meters. Renovations will also update apron areas with similar improvements.
The construction is led by Bulgarian company Stimex EOOD as part of a consortium that includes Avtomagistrali – Tcherno More JSC (specializing in asphalt pavements) and UTI Construction and Facility Management SA from Romania (electrical engineering).
Fraport Twin Star states that this investment aims to further develop efficient airports along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast while supporting tourism growth and regional economic activity.
