Following the appointment of Haiti’s new government, the European Union (EU), through Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica, has pledged further support for the country through a new aid package.
“Through our new support we clearly show the solidarity of the European Union towards Haiti,” Mimica said in an announcement. “We remain committed to supporting the Haitian population and the reconstruction and stabilization of the country.”
The EU has pledged $20.1 million in funding for Haiti’s recovery following devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew in October. Another $15.8 million is allocated as exceptional budget support, while the remaining $4.3 million will go towards an agricultural project. The EU has also pledged $49 million for the construction of National Road No. 3 in a deal signed by Haitian Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant.
“I am aware that the people of Haiti have suffered for many years from poor road conditions,” Mimica said. “The EU is committed to the completion of the National Road No. 3 all the way from Port-au-Prince to Cap Haitian. I am delighted to be signing this project which will help the development of the island. This road will facilitate community access to health centers, schools and other services.”
