Burgas Airport and Varna Airport, both managed by Fraport Bulgaria, reported a combined total of 3.7 million passengers in 2025, reflecting an 11% increase compared to the previous year. The two airports handled over 27,000 aircraft movements with flights operated by 64 Bulgarian and international airlines to more than 90 destinations across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Fraport Bulgaria serves as the concessionaire for both airports and operates them as gateways to the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, connecting the region to various international destinations (source). The company is a joint German-Bulgarian entity in which Fraport AG holds a majority share of 60% (source).

At Burgas Airport, passenger numbers reached 1.8 million in 2025. The airport marked its one-millionth passenger for the year on July 31—an early milestone not seen since before the pandemic. Throughout the year, Burgas Airport hosted flight programs from 51 airlines serving 67 destinations. Since October 30, however, the airport has been closed for flights due to a full runway rehabilitation project valued at over €50 million.

The top five countries by passenger volume at Burgas were Poland (409,000), United Kingdom (395,000), Czech Republic (222,000), Germany (213,000), and Israel (99,000). Leading destinations included London, Prague, Katowice, Tel Aviv, and Warsaw. Three new airlines began operating at Burgas during this period.

In total for Burgas Airport: there were 13,274 aircraft movements—7,117 scheduled and 4,143 charter flights—with peak activity in July and August. On July 29 alone, a record of 23,680 passengers was set. The airport also processed about 731 tons of cargo and mail during the year.

Ryanair led among airlines by passenger numbers at Burgas Airport in 2025; other major carriers included Smartwings, Jet2.com, Electra Airways and TUI Airways.

Varna Airport also celebrated reaching its one-millionth passenger on August 5. Over the course of the year it served more than 1.8 million passengers through flight programs from forty airlines covering sixty-one destinations. New routes introduced included Abu Dhabi and Linz; six new airlines joined operations at Varna last year.

Germany accounted for most Varna passengers (596,000), followed by Bulgaria (225,000), United Kingdom (151,000), Austria (145,000) and Poland (142,000). Top city pairs from Varna were Sofia; London; Vienna; Istanbul; Frankfurt.

Varna handled a total of fourteen thousand one hundred fifty-nine aircraft movements—ten thousand six hundred seventy-four scheduled flights plus one thousand eight hundred eighty-seven charters—with peak day traffic recorded on August twelve when sixteen thousand two hundred fifty-two passengers passed through its terminals. Cargo throughput totaled approximately one hundred ninety-five tons.

Wizz Air topped airline rankings at Varna after basing a second aircraft there in April while upgrading both planes from Airbus A320s to A321neo models with increased seating capacity. Other leading carriers included Bulgaria Air; Turkish Airlines; Austrian Airlines; Electra Airways.

Fraport Bulgaria continues efforts to enhance service quality through employee training initiatives and modernization projects (source). The company collaborates with key partners in tourism to boost regional traffic (source) and aims to further expand flight offerings in future seasons.

“Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD expresses its gratitude to all partners for the excellent cooperation and successful joint projects throughout the year as well as to all passengers visiting the two Black Sea airports for unforgettable moments! Burgas Airport and Varna Airport look forward to welcoming everyone with an even richer flight program in 2026!”
