The Council of the European Union has decided that Bulgaria will adopt the euro as its official currency starting January 1, 2026. This decision was made on July 8, 2025, under Article 140, paragraph 2 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

According to the EU’s decision, Bulgaria’s national currency will be converted to euros at a fixed exchange rate of EUR 1 = BGN 1.95583.

Further details about Bulgaria’s transition to the euro are available on the official website for Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area (https://www.evroto.bg/), which is part of a communication strategy aimed at providing information and publicity regarding this change.
