In 2024, Slovenia has once again been recognized for its commitment to sustainable tourism. Six destinations in the country have been included in the "Green Destinations Top 100 Stories" list. These destinations are Bela Krajina, Brežice, Jeruzalem, Ljubljana, Miren-Kras, and Rogla-Pohorje.
This recognition highlights Slovenia's ongoing efforts to position itself as a leader in sustainable travel. The country's consistent presence on this list underscores its dedication to environmental preservation and sustainable tourism practices.
Bela Krajina is noted for preserving nature while enhancing the quality of life. It promotes visits outside peak seasons and encourages longer stays to enrich visitor experiences and protect the environment.
Brežice has achieved zero-waste certification for its festivals, reducing waste significantly at events like the City Promenade. This destination emphasizes public transport use and prioritizes recycled materials.
Jeruzalem offers a unique experience with its dispersed hotel concept among vineyards. Visitors can enjoy wines and traditional cuisine while staying in various accommodations unified under one concept.
Ljubljana hosts LUV Fest from February to March, celebrating love and culture with art installations and concerts. This initiative supports year-round tourism beyond the summer months.
Rogla-Pohorje provides year-round outdoor activities adapting to climate change challenges. The area offers themed trails, a bike park, and a flying slide during warmer months while maintaining winter sports facilities.
Miren-Kras collaborates with Italy's Prolocco Fogliano-Redipuglia on Sounds of Peace - I Suoni della Pace – Zvoki miru project along the Path of Peace. This initiative includes concerts featuring musicians from both countries along historical World War I sites.
Slovenia continues crafting inspiring green stories that resonate globally. In 2023, six Slovenian destinations were also among the top 100 green destinations: Kranj, Brežice, Miren-Kras, Ljubljana, Ormoške lagune, and Šalek Valley.
Since 2016, Slovenia has been recognized as the world's first fully green destination due to its sustainability efforts guided by the 2022-2028 Slovenian Tourism Strategy focusing on responsible growth and promoting off-peak season visitation.
