Prime Minister Dorin Recean has requested local farmers to engage in discussions with each other and the government to find effective solutions to the persistent issues facing the agricultural sector in Moldova.
“The situation for many farmers has been quite complicated for years," Recean said. "This year, the drought and heat have worsened the problems. The government stands with farmers, and I encourage them to come to the table of discussions, where solutions can be found."
The government allocated 200 million lei for loss compensation—100 million lei in July and another 100 million lei from the Intervention Fund in September. Additionally, a special law modeled after Romania’s was passed by Parliament to assist farmers, and a regulatory framework has been established to allow farmers to defer debt enforcement for six months.
In the past four years, the government has subsidized the agriculture sector with seven billion lei—the highest amount since Moldova's independence. Recean reiterated that simply increasing financial aid is insufficient, saying “a serious change is needed so that farmers no longer incur losses.”
Last week, Parliament approved a special law to support farmers affected by the severe drought in 2024, allowing for the extension of renegotiations on payment obligations for accumulated debts, including principal amounts, interest, and penalties.
