The Republic of Srpska announced the successful passage of
the Law of Food during its 106th session of government last week.
The new law covers all aspects of the food production chain to ensure the
safety of food and food for animals.
The law provides legal remedies to ensure that all entities
involved in food production and food for animals take responsibility for the
safety of their products. The law also defines the roles and responsibilities of
the Ministries of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management; Health and Social
Welfare; and other agencies regarding food safety.
During the 106th session, the government also
approved the Draft Law on Veterinary Activity, which will regulate
veterinary activity. It includes provisions for all aspects of veterinary
health in regards to animals and food safety.
The Draft Law on "Drina" National Park was also
approved. Park boundaries and regulations were defined in by the new law: the national park will protect rare habitats and native species, including brown
bears, eagles and chamois, a unique member of the Bovidae family, which
includes the American bison, Barbary sheep, bongo and Thomson's gazelle.
Other laws and strategies passed, as well, such as changes in notary
examinations and procedures for disciplinary actions; standardizing waste
management to conform with European Union regulations; enhancing science and
technology; and controlling and upgrading flood control measures.
The government
also passed regulations regarding the Integrated Support Program for
Reintegration of Returnees, which affects the rights of refugees, displaced persons
and returnees.
